View Full Version : "Obama Infomercial more popular than final game of world series"

"Mr. Obama’s 30-minute commercial, which played on seven networks, broadcast and cable, was seen by 33.55 million viewers, according to figures released by Nielsen Media Research. On the three broadcast networks that carried the special, the audience totaled more than 25 million, easily surpassing the number for the last World Series game on Fox, which averaged 19.8 million viewers. The special was also available on Univision, and three cable networks, MSNBC, BET and TV One.

“I was shocked by the number Obama was able to draw,” said Leslie Moonves, the chairman of CBS. “It’s just a stunning number.”

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

On the one hand, you have politics actually taking precedent over sports. This is good.

On the other hand, if football was on, instead of baseball, more would have watched the game. A sad sign of baseball's decline. :(

I'm a baseball fan so I find it kind of depressing that the biggest game of the year was passed up by most viewers for a political infomercial that basically told us what we already knew about Obama.

On a side-note, if it was Red Sox v Dodgers... more would have watched.

HI, BILLY MAYS HERE FOR BARACK OBAMA! YOU DON'T NEED AN OLD GEEZER OR CARIBOU BARBIE RUNNING YOUR COUNTRY! YOU NEED BARACK OBAMA! BARACK OBAMA IS NOT BLACK, HE'S NOT WHITE, BUT AN AMAZING COMBINATION OF THE TWO! JUST LOOK HOW HE EATS A MAYONNAISE SANDWICH WITH A CUP OF GRAPE DRANK! AMAZING!

The final game of the World Series was suspended because of rain for one thing. Second, (sad but true) the only people who care about the Rays vs the Phillies are the Rays and Phillies fans (as well as die-hard baseball fans like myself). The Rays don't have that many fans since they just became good like a week ago. Had New York or Boston or Los Angeles or even the Cubs been in the world series, things woulda been different. Also I figure the One station vs multiple station thing Brilliance said is true also.

Last note, the fans don't care what TV ratings are. If Boston is in the world series and I'm the only one in the world who watches it, I don't give a shit. Do you think the Phillies fans care that the ratings for their series was low? Probably not.

Most casual baseball fans only care about their team and their players. If their team isn't involved, then they don't care. It's like this for every sport isn't it? I don't follow football or soccer or whatever so I'm just guessing.

To me the comparison to the World Series wasn't the main point, Xler. It's just interesting to me the interplay of popularity, money, and excitement that is evident in these elections. Hell, I'd love to know how to advertise myself and my ideas and get 35 million people to watch it.

Actually this world series was the worst turnout of watchers ever. Thats what happens when you have two small market teams playing against each other in the World Series. You throw in a boston, ny, or la and you'll see how much the ratings will go up.

Perhaps it wasn't the mainpoint. I just happen to have very little interest in this sort of thing (advertising/politics/etc) so my initial reaction was from a baseball perspective. I am actually surprised that this infomercial being higher rated than the world series game was the case, regardless of the teams playing

Seen the informercial on The Young Turks. Im supporting Obama, and of course i was aware not all of it was true, but the infomercial was pretty well done for a political advertising. Especially the fact he didnt say the name John McCain a single time, it was 100% positive. A John McCain spot like that would be about Obama and hows a terrorist/america-hater/socialist/communist/anti-semite for a whole 30 minutes, if he had the money.

i agree, if boston la this series would have had 30m+ viewers. or maybe cubs or something. i don't think baseball is on the decline for viewers, but i think the game is declining for sure

Football isn't even an Olympic sport, and no country outside of America really cares about it. Soccer, AFAIK is the most popular sport in the world. Baseball definitely comes before football if you consider internationalism.

Actually, here's a list to put it in perspective (several other sites give similar rankings): http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_most_popular_sport_in_the_world

1) Football (Soccer). 3.3-3.5 Billion Fans. (Europe, Africa, Asia, Americas, etc)
2) Cricket 2-3. Billion Fans. (India,U.K,Pakistan,Asia,Australia,etc)
3) Field Hockey. 2-2.2 Billion Fans. (Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia)
4) Tennis. Around 1 Billion Fans. (Europe, Americas, Asia)
5) Volleyball Around 900 Million Fans. (Asia, Erope, Americas, Australia)
6) Table Tennis Around 900 Million Fans. (Asia, Europe, Africa, Americas)
7) Baseball Around 500 Million Fans. (U.S, Japan, Cuba, Dom rep)
8) Golf Around 400 Million Fans. (U.S, Canada, Europe)
9) Gridiron (American football) 390-410 Million Fans. (U.S mainly)
10) Basketball Not more than 400M Fans. (U.S, Canada mainly)

Average baseball game: 2:50 (in 2004)
Average football game: 3:02 for non televised, and like 3:15 for televised game

So i guess football fails by your standard.

Baseball doesn't have 300lb men running and sumo wrestling other 300lb men every 40 seconds....people would die if football was faster paced.

Manchester United Football Club [...] is one of the most popular football clubs in the world,[3] with over 330 million supporters worldwide[4][5] – almost 5% of the world's population

Now do you think that manchester united supporters are more or less than 10% of all soccer fans worldwide? Because if its less, the statistic has to be right.

Like louis wain has stated ruby is a similar sport played without pads, and they only have 1 hour and 20 minutes to play, no stopage no rest nothing, thats it just 1 hour and 20 minutes of play and I don't see them dying every game. Am I missing something? Btw i thought you guys were saying baseball is boring from the viewers perspective not the players, if so then why you talking about the players for? I think you missed the part where he claimed the players would be incapable of playing faster - which was his justification of the game being longer. Mentioning the baseball players lack of movement was simply to show that they have more of a rest, following his logic: they need less time to play the game.

However, rugby takes it to an extreme, one we shouldn't look at since the entire argument is stupid. If you don't like to watch the sports, watch another sport or don't watch at all. (Then again there is always the "I can make my comment because it's my opinion." argument, but then we're just fighting for no reason. That's wasted time, time we could spend watching soccer!)

PS: I meant the guy in MYM, football is boring ;)
