View Full Version : leaving tomes on the ground?

Another possibly obvious answer but i am new to the game and so it makes sense to ask something that seems crazy to me.
In many of the replays i have watched of moon/soccer etc i have noticed them leave tomes of agility/manuals of health on the ground. At first i thought possibly they didnt notice them but i have since discarded that theory. Secondly i assumed they were saving them for second heroes....but again they still dont pick up the items.
I thought a tome was a win/win. More stats without taking up an item slot...what am i missing? :)

they just miss them or have shift clicked their creep pattern. sometimes the time it takes to go get a tome isnt worth the effort for pro's!

yeah they just dont find them important enough to come back to them if they already walked away. Indeed a +1 agility on a deathknight is virtually useless (though I wouldnt want to miss a +1 str or +1 int). higher level tomes are never missed though (+2, exp tome and tome of knowledge)...
If you watch a vod of a pro playing you will see how fast they play and that they might notice tomes too late or not at all.

I can understand the leaving behind of tomes in a game based on speed and initiative, but in this game (http://www.wcreplays.com/replay.php?m=View&rid=7139), Satiini destroys a tome while his hero stands patiently by, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why.

yA i actually asked resolver why they don't steal each other items at the pro level and its because of "honor" haha.

I don't believe playing worse is ever done due to "honor" in a serious game.
The reason people leave tomes is because when you are playing in multiple places at once (base, army, maybe your hero is harassing, maybe you have a scout or two on the map) creeping is the first place you take time away from to do other things. Coming back at the end of a creep and moving on as fast as possible sometimes means lost tomes, or lost items. People generally will spend the time there to try to avoid having the item-dropping creep not stolen, and that's why you see items almost never forgotten. (But it does happen.)
Satiini probably misclicked attack instead of right click (I can't see any other reason to destroy a tome lol)

If he did that, then his hero woulda moved, he just sat there. I believe he purposely destroyed it. Probably just so we would talk about it. Really, it's the highlight of that game :curious:.

I hadn't seen the game, but assumed he killed with hero. I watched now, and, if I had to formulate a reason that would actually maybe fit a real game is he forgot he wasn't vs BM and didn't want to move MK and not get a surround on units wanting to harass his expo.
But yeah, maybe you're right too I dunno - strange move.

sometimes, especially when split creeping/harassing, I tell my hero to go get the tome and then a few seconds later tell my creeping party to move onto the next camp, the hero gets blocked and doesn't get to the tome on time
I dunno if its worth running him back to the camp to pick it up when I notice he didn't get it, especially if I'm racing to get 3 before I get pushed or something.
I imagine it's more of an issue for pros who would play far faster than me, hero getting pathing blocked while you are controlling your harassing hero.

Comeon man, these guys have played the maps so many times, they know exacly what tomes each creep can drop. It is most likely the fact that it isn't worth the time, like you pointed out earlier.

If you face a blademaster you better pick it up so he does not though.
he just didn't want his hero to get to the tome, because the army of rotterdam could come in any sec and he wanted his mk to be there... He then destroyed the tome with peasants so he could build his town hall
simple as that

They simply forget. They're worrying about other things while multi-tasking.

It's actually a good question. If they have enough time to pick up an item, why not a tome? It can't be because they're doing so many things at once that they don't notice it (if that were the case they wouldn't have noticed item drops either). And if it's because they don't want to waste time, well, I don't see how taking 2 seconds to let your hero get a tome is a waste of time considering it's only 2 seconds and he does get an increase in stats for it.

I heard once that pros leave tomes/weak items on the ground to see if the enemy passed by. Ex: I leave a tome at an expo, 2 minutes later I send a scout there and see if the item is still there. If it isn't it means that the enemy came and took the tome.

If that were the case then all the pros would know that and wouldn't pick up the tome to lure you into a false sense of security :D

I think no one said it, but they leave the tomes 'cause they forget.

Yeah they definitely leave them there because they forget. On smaller camps, they don't care too much for the items because usually they're pathetic and they just shift click. If it's a tome from a big camp, you rarely ever see it not picked up.
