View Full Version : Frost Mage Spec

I'm on the cusp of 53 now and very happy with my frost mage. It's really paying off now with points in frostbite. Ice block is the best. I love the deer in the headlights look of warriors/rogues who focus on me, then when I pop the iceblock they realize I am invulnerable and that they are about to get destroyed by my groupmates. I can't wait to get ice barrier ^_^
Anyway here it is. Any thoughts?

I prefer 5/5 Permafrost and 3/3 Winters chill over Imp. Frostbolt.

A frostmage will be spamming frostbolt, so increasing permafrost would really help that much as when your next frostbolt hits, you get another slow(and slows from bolts don't stack)

Winters chill seems kinda pointless to me(unless i gets improved but only 7% for 2 talent points?).
Only thing i would change.
Not having the 2 points in winters chill. 1 into improved blizzard and 1 into frost channeling.
I don't know anywhere near as much as you though.
I have the same arcane setup and i don't think i could play mage without those 18 talent points into arcane xD..

Take those 2 skills, add Imp Blizzard 3/3, do a instance and then come back to say that. No runners, dying rogues/warriors get away easily etc.

One point into Improved Blizzard gives me the slowing effect. I think it's decreasing returns after that. And yes koleen is right that spamming frostbolt makes permafrost pretty useless, which is why I haven't put that point in yet and am debating whether I will. It's really just for runners.
Personally I believe 5/5 Permafrost and 3/3 Winter's Chill to be overkill when you can get plenty of slowing effect with just a few points and put the rest into damage.
One thing I am thinking about is sacrificing maybe a point in Winter's Chill and Arctic Reach to get two points in Piercing Ice, which would raise my base frost spell damage by 4%. That doesn't seem like much for 2 points though, even with crits on top of it. I may be able to get the same result with +damage gear.

I really don't see why anyone doesn't do frost/arcane as you have done. Ice block is ownage in PvP too, own's dots and etc...

Sapphire can you beat hunters/druids/priests as a frostmage?
At my current lvl and with only a few points into the frost part of my build i get totally raped by hunters/druids/priests. Wondering if i get better against those classes later into the build. Druid and priest is somewhat close but hunters seem to have np at all with me.

hmm i recently started a mage on a low pop server and wondering which is better for fast leveling.. frost/arc or fire/arc
fire does more damage but frost is good too for the chill effects and stuff
:curious:

Paz (my housemate) has the best Frost Mage build I've seen. He's one of the highest regarded Level 60 Mage's on Blackrock, and I see him rip it up in PvP / Raid instances all the time. He rerolled his talents at least 10-15 times just to perfect it.
I'll check his char out later and add his build to this thread.

Cool, thanks VVoLF.
BrIaN if I get the jump on the hunter I usually win. But if he gets his pet on me and starts with that viper shot I'm going to have trouble. Priests own me because I don't have my two points into improved counterspell yet. I do well against warriors and rogues. If I see a shaman I sheep it and run. If I manage to kill it, he was afk. I almost never see a druid PVPing who is my level or lower. And they usually run. If I'm versus a mage, I'll lose if the mage is fire specced. I have like a 50/50 chance of winning versus a warlock depending how lucky he is with fear/what pet he has out.
That said, I'm not a big duelist. My spec is for support in group PVP and for getting out of potentially nasty situations. :)

Against the hunter i usually frost nova the pet to keep it out of the battle for aslong as possible and try fighting the hunter(without pet). Now that i am starting to advance into the frost section of my build it is becoming closer duels with hunters and i am coming out better against druids. I have the 4 second silence(counterspell improved) but i am not sure when to use it against the priest. I have dueled 1 fire mage and i owned him, i had power word fortitude and mark of the wild though =P

Haven't ever played a mage, but is there any reason that polymorphing the pet wouldn't be effective?
Blynx
01-31-2005, 01:54 PM
Can only poly humanoids. Also with all the Aoe you have to be really careful not to hit if them while they polymorphed.
Sapphire
01-31-2005, 06:22 PM
Huh? I poly pets all the time. You can poly humanoids and beasts.
Blynx

o_O i tried once and it said invalid targget so i never tried again :(
Even if i could get the pet polymorphed when i frost nova it would probably hit it and bring it out of the poly (cause i am newb).
VVoLF

You just can't poly Undead. Because apparently during the time period between WarCraft III and WoW, the undead found some kind of immunity to it. :p

I just don't see the point of slowing them down more/for longer. I'm all about damage of crits and I would never give up the extra damge of CoC for them. AoE fo' life foo'.
On the fire mage side, I watched a freakin' awesome pvp video of a fire mage raping people in pvp with a vengeance. Check this crap out:
