Well here I am a lvl 43 mage (my main), Herbalism Alchemy.
I don't use my profession that much, and realistically I could just buy whatever potions I need.
I don't need my professions to make me money (I've made 400G so far on a lvl 5 alt)
I've got a fairly large guild, I doubt they really "need" me to do anything.
So what should I be doing? Is tailoring worth it for making high end cloth stuff, or can I get all I need from just running instances? Other than that I really don't have any ideas. Or are they all worthless enough that I should just keep herbalism/alchemy to save myself a little money (on major healing potions, major mana potions, and swiftness potions)?

If you really don't need it, why are you worrying about what you have?

Why dont you ask your guildmates instead of us? It's not like we benefit from your tradeskills. ;P

Because I feel like I should be doing something useful with my professions, yet nothing seems that useful.

So then just go Fish, Cook, and First Aid. You can do something by doing nothing with Fishing. ;)

Ideally every sizeable guild should have someone active in every trade specialization. Find out which one is missing in your guild.
At 60 people will be clamoring for epic crafted items such as Hide of the Wild, Thorium Brotherhood recipes, mooncloth items and Belt of the Archmage, flask recipes (alchemy), etc.
If crafting isn't for you, you can gather materials for the crafters in your guild.
Crafting doesn't seem that useful until you really need something and that person is missing in your guild. Example - if you want to do Blackwing Liar it's a good idea to have a dragonscale leatherworker in your guild.

As a mage if you could get a robe of archmage pattern it might be benefitial for you. quite a good robe and only tailors can use as it is bop. The belt ain't to shabby either ^_^

I've noticed that, at least in my guild and a few others on my server, that Engineering is quite lacking. You may want to check and see if you could use Engineering to benefit your guild.
If you don't feel like crafting, just go any combination Mining/Herbalism/Skinning and help out others in your guild. Even though people may have all they need, they could still use more to make extra items to sell at auction or whatnot.

I spent loads of money leveling my engineering to artisan and I have never used it since. Most of the things I can make now (goblin engineer) are just like "meh" and I couldn't be bothered wasting materials on the recipes. It might come in handy one day I guess.

Ya Tank, mmbut d-bos says:
engineering is wtfhax. I'd go engineering on all my chars from now on too.
Oh ya, and I'm Herb/Alch, and sometimes I spend a whole day walking around without even turning on my flower finder. Might be a bad sign. =)

Hehe i have gnomish engineering and not a day goes by where i use those lovelies on some hordes. Mostly the mind control cap and the fire dmg reflector trinket. As a goblin engineer you might want to get the goblin rocket helmet (great for crowd control, even in pve) or the goblin mortar which is totally awesome in hillsbrad zergs.

I havnt been playing long Im lvl 30 hunter with leatherworking/skinning and I skin so much I just went artisan a couple levels ago, whats the highest?
Sapphire said dragonscale leatherworker, where would I find that? when I reach a much higher level of course. And I think theres 2 others, are those the 3 choices after artisan or is there a step above artisan befor e them?

I really am just looking for something I would be able to use effectively on my mage.
This comes down to:
Alchemy, Tailoring, Engineering - Or some combination of them.
Let's talk.

A combo would require either a extremely good guild or a shitload of money on the AH.

Right, after some thought, I see it like this:
-If I'm going to pay for herbs for Alchemy, I might as well just have bought the potions themselves.
-And with tailoring I would be spending a crapload of time and money just to get a few items that might be really hard to get anyways.
-As for Engineering a lot of people are telling me how useful it is, but I'm still not sure if it's worth the trouble.
I might just stick with Herb/Alch since I'll probably start needing consumables more once I start doing BG anyways.

The only problem you're going to run in too as far as Tailoring goes (or at least in my experiences so far) is the Pearls, and possibly, the Leather. Other than that, you should be able to obtain all the cloth you need from grinding (in about 6 hours of grinding yesterday in Arathi I ended up with close to 7 stacks of Silk Cloth). I usually have a guildie who is able to provide the Leater I need to make those certain recipes, so I don't have much trouble making whatever I want.

I can actually grind silk a lot faster than that (having a mage :dancing: )
When I was talking about things being hard to put together, I was actually speaking specifically about the Belt of the Archmagi, and the Robe of the Archmagi. =)

I'm newb at this game...I think I need to fix my spell order, as I generally have to rest every 3 fights.

Oh, I am too. But once you get some levels up on the guys that drop silk, you can just rip right through them.

All in all, i guess my real questions come down to these:
1) Is it worth it to lvl Tailoring just to get the Robe and the Belt of the Archmagi?
2) If I was to go Engineering, what should I choose as a companion profession? (Already high lvl Alchemy. Should I keep that, or go Tailoring, or go truding around leveling up mining?)

If you're going Engineering, go Mining as well, because you often need metals to produce your objects. Otherwise, you will end up spending more on mats for your Engineering than you will selling things you make with them.
As for Tailoring, I haven't gotten that high yet (currently 155 skill =X), so I can't really comment too well.

if you go engineering you better go mining. you need alot of minerals. you'll need copper then bronze then silver then iron then mithril and so on.

Yea plus my guild does the "slightly reduced prices for guildmates" thing.
Tank's guild on the other hand shares everything with each other!

Your guild actually sells stuff to eachother? WTF.
Man that's sad.

It doesn't help your dilemma, but I can't figure out how to use my alchemy. I have some flasks, I have tons of herbs, but I can't figure out how to combine stuff to get points to buy my first recipe. Any help appreciated.

Spellbook > General > Alchemy (you need to have it trained).
There should be one or two potions already ready to make there, make these until you have high enough skill to buy your recipes.
