What is the purpose of getting MGs? Thier cost is amazing and they have medium armor? why? I know with the upgrades they are decent but why would you spend the cash on a MG when you could have almost two bears?
thanks,

generally their not too useful but if you have an expo they work well vs UD, with the upgrades of course, since bears get raped to hell by destros. Their also usefull in ffa, when fully upped and used with a few staves you won't lose any

MGs are excellent unit choices in 2s, providing you can stall them enough before they put to much pressure on you. Basically MGs with 2 passive upgrades combined with staffs are excellent meatshields. Rifles/Fiends just don't cut it vs MGs while the rest of your army and your friend will do the damage. Mixing a couple of Dryads at Tier 2 is also advisable but never build to many MGs. 3 to 4 is enough imo.

They tank piercing damage pretty well.

If you have a big army, 85+ pop, one MG can make a whole lot of difference with taunt.

I like the fact that they have medium armor so magic and piercing are reduced. So the best counters are ur melee like grunts and ghouls but resistant skin counters those so all your left with are your heavy melee units like tauren and aboms.

i like to get 1-2 when they are getting mass ranged/magic since the medium armor... taunt, and let the huntress, dryads, or whatever do the rest! But, besides that i would go bear.. cause rejuvination just kicks other healing spells down in the dirt... and roar, omg, that extra attack will DEFINATLY help with NE... hope i help, gl hf.

Mgs have very poor attack for a 7 food unit. They are much better for tanking because they can take a lot of attacks and have resistant skin (i.e. resistant skin). So if you wanted to tank then a few Mgs by taunting could help if you were massing casters or something

I use them against Hu, since they can take really good, so that your dryads can focus on the casters while your MGs take the damage. But, what is more important, the taunt ability is able to let the Hu army only focus your MGs and not the dryads and that's why i love them against Hu (of course, you should add some bears later in game).

[Solo] useful vs human like on LT, when you dont want to leave yourself too open incase of a tier 2 attack, otherwise if game goes on and u got like 5-6 bears then get 1-2 MGs to soak up the damage if you have an expo. reasonably useful vs UD as well.
[2v2] Useful vs human or undead opponents, especially since if you go bears bolt/coil/nova just own bears unless you've got 4-5 (also destro). BE warned that not to do it vs orc because they wil just get hex or kodo and then push tier 2 and u will have mgs that are good for nothin but a meal for the kodos without the grades ;)
[3v3] probably elfs best strat is mass mgs, or mg/dryads.

in 3s and 4s melee's main role is to tank for the army, giants do this better than any other unit. Bears will simply die too fast.
Giants are also the only melee that is viable if you are vs a lot of heavy air

Personally, I only use MGs versus undead who go bansees and are willing to posses my Bears. But they can not posses MGs with resistant skin.
However, at lower levels/skills, MG + Mainly archers does nice versus Human aswell
The only time i use MGs is when my opponent goes for Headhunters, because he would eat my bears, so i play MGs/Archer/Dryads :)

They are great in 2s. They work vs ud sometimes depending on how much gold you have, hero choices and your opponents unit choice.

mg has 10 armor with medium armor +12 dmg reduced +spell resistance... raise only armor updates and u will have a perfect tank that is impossible to kill if u have staffs. Mass taunt whenever its possible, also its a imba thing when he tries to run away, taunt and its like a uber stunt :D
Well, mg's are meant for soaking up damage in teamagames, mainly. But when facing lets say mass banshees and necros with spider, a few mg's really do the trick (you should always have an expo tho' when going mg in solo.

I'll add an MG in mirror if it's bear/dryad vs. bear/dryad and he's able to get good dryad position every time. Then the MG can really mess up their dryad micro, also bears get all screwed up and you have a better position. Plus, nearly nothing can run from frost arrow if they're taunted first. Always get resistant skin though, without it the MG will die faster than two bears. If you don't have the wood for skin it's not worth getting the MG.

I'm not going to test it but I'm 100% sure that Tauren would win in an even food battle, maybe even in an even unit battle.

you can click the staff or you use the num pad and the unit will teleport to the highest town hall...

no one starts out knowing everything about the game
but to the question of mg vs tauren, it is my theory that the tauren will win (with even upgrades, 1v1) because mg has medium armor and tauren has normal attack. Now maybe if you get the mg physical damage upgrade, this might change, someone should test this out. I might tonight, i'll report back if i do.

MGs also tank ghouls very well with their hardened skin... one ghoul does something like 2 damage per hit to them then. I, as an UD player, always feared them. but you prolly need 2+ expands ... well, elf solves ;)
