I dunno about epics.... but fishing is worth it anyway. Exploiting people's laziness is how a lot of people make money in the world, including warcraft. With the introduction of schools fishing is even more helpful for those with a bit of patience/time to burn.

You can get the Big Iron Fishing Pole in the cages in the water outside of the horde town in Desolace. The cages are for a horde quest, but anyone can open the cages. Most of the time they will drop a quest item, sometimes mobs that you will have to kill, and sometimes the fishing pole. It is a bit rare, so expect to spend some time down there - bring a warlock, a Hydrocane or some underwater breathing pots.

You can also win a really good pole by winning the fishing contest that is held in Stranglethorn Vale, but that's normally pretty hard - so go for the Big Iron Fishing Pole, and you should be set.

A good fishing spot is Bay of Storms in Azshara, you'll normally have to bring bait to be able to fish there (I use +100 bait to boost my fishing up to 322 with the Big Iron Fishing Pole and the glove enchant). This is the best spot to fish for Stonescale Eel. You can also get a bunch of Nighfin Snapper in Verdantis River in Feralas (used for Nightfin Soup). For lower level fishing, Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris is a good spot as you can get Stonescale Eel there, too. Even lower levels can fish in Wetlands and in Hillsbrad (alliance - I don't know where the best horde spots are), there are plenty of schools of Firefin Snapper and Oily Blackmouth.

Another tip is to fish inside of Scholomance, in the rooms with water on the floor. You can get Nightfin Snapper there along with Plated Armorfish which apparently will be used in a quest in patch 1.11.

If you have the Savory Deviate Delight recipe (cooking) you should fish in The Barrens for the Deviate Fish. Horde players can easily fish outside, though if you are alliance, I'd recommend going inside Wailing Caverns to avoid getting ganked if you are on a PvP server.

For the first guy who asked if you can fish epics - I don't know. But you can at least get greens, if you fish the Floating Wreckage pools, you will sometimes get bloated fish that you can open to find a gem or an item, or small boxes that can contain money, materials or items. I have fished up several greens and several gems. The higher level fishing, the better items, too.

The 1 Ring (http://www.thottbot.com/?i=5503)

You can get this from fishing, but it's really rare. Be careful though, I hear it can turn you into a leper gnome over time
