until you are level 60, you don't much have to concern yourself with sets, and by the time you are level 60 you'll know what kind of things to look for in gear.

for starting out, id recommend affliction talents. first tier is the godly improved corruption talent, second tier you get imp life tap which is a fantastic grinding talent and very useful overall, then you start getting into stuff like improved life drain, fel concentration, nightfall and so on which are all abilities that are great against mobs when levelling up. those talents should take you into your mid-thirties to max out, at which point im sure you'll have a better idea of what you want :)

on the whole i would not recommend destruction pre-40.

I'd go affliction for levelling as a warlock. once you hit the lvl cap oyu can pretty much do whatever but affliction is the way to go for levelling.

I am a Demonology fanatic, even for leveling. But if you go affliction, after you get 5/5 Improved corruption, don't waste points on Improved life drain, because Drain life at lower levels is going to be barely affected 10%, giving maybe two or three more health.

I would go 3/5 Suppression, then 2/2 Improved Life tap. Then after that it's drain tanking, using the Fel concentration talent. Have fun trying to manage your health and mana, because I know when I tried it, Drain Tanking led to more downtime than what I was doing when I was Demonology.

Edit: Oh, I forgot. Warlocks are great at low levels, because gear doesn't matter a whole lot. The only thing you want to make sure of is that you have a decent wand. At level 5 you can get a Lesser Magic Wand, made by enchanters, that will do more damage than your shadow bolt. At level 13 you get Greater Magic Wand, also made by enchanters, that can carry you into your mid-twenties, easily. Makes for good DPS costing no mana.

Your Shadow Bolt doesn't do 530 damage at level 5. That would be nice though :P And just so you know, when you equip something, you can still take it off and equip something different, so you aren't stuck with it the whole game.

Now, if you bought your character and it's already at 60, then I suggest you either get a refund or delete it and start over. Not only is half of the fun in leveling, you aren't going to know anything about your character if they are already level 60.

If you aren't level 60, then don't worry about what set you should be trying to get. You can't get those until level 60 anyways.

Also, you can change your talents later on, whenever you want to. So if you go with Affliction now, you can change to Destruction later. But, if you want to go destruction because your friend said so, then go ahead. Why would you come on here and ask us, if you already have your mind set on destruction?

If you are a new player, my first tip is: Try different things out.

Make sure to learn all the skills you can train, and try them all out. Learn what they do, how they work. Pay attention and learn as much about your class as you can.

If you make an active effort to learn about the game, you will get better and the rest will come by itself.

This isnt Diablo where your talents stay with you forever, i agree that affli is better for lvling, then the tier 1 set is if you wanna spam bolts and tier 2 set prolly better for high dmg, but just focus at what you have right now and dont worry about the late game just yet.
