Wild fires rage every summer. It's natural. However, here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan we are very rarely hit with major wild fires. Back in 2007 we had the Sleeper Lake fire, which burned roughly 18,000 acres. It went down as being the 3rd largest fire in the history of MI and, I believe, 2nd largest in the UP. It was a pretty insane time period while that fire was fought.
Anyway, like I said, we aren't use to major wild fires like out west is. So, the numbers may seem small compared to those, but for us they are pretty major. Also, the UP isn't exactly huge. We're chilling at about 22k acres burned right now, including 6 miles of Superior shoreline: ![]() The Rainbow Lodge on the Two-Hearted River. Pretty "historic" location for those familiar with the area: ![]() Flames were hitting 200 feet at one point. They described the fire as "something you only see out west" due to the wind conditions and lack of rain (area has had a tenth of an inch all summer, and we didn't have shit for winter) ![]() A road I've traveled hundreds of times: ![]() Shoreline again: ![]() Sat: ![]() I didn't take any of these pictures, as I currently live 2 hours away from my town..but this is quite literally my neck of the woods burning down, even more so than the fire from '07. So, yeah, how are fires raging for everyone else? @_@ EDIT: I'm not sure if anyone remembers, but I use to talk about working at Tahquamenon Falls State Park, which is a park revolving around 2 water falls (obviously), it has currently been evacuated/closed down and is in jeopardy of being hit. Really sucks :\ EDIT2: I might try to head that way tomorrow on my day off and see if I can get any good pictures. Forest fires play an important role in the ecosystem.
I have nothing more to contribute to this at this time.

QQ Half of New Mexico dies every year due to wild fires. Last year was worse but this year we got hit by a nasty one in the Gilas and now the smoke has travelled over 100 miles to my city.. Smelly, hazy :/
