Best value for monwy iPhone contract UK

Hi guys,

So I managed to get my dream job in London and need to get settled down before it starts beginning of next year.
I am currently using the iPhone 3GS but def wouldn't mind splurging my sign-on bonus on some meat stuff like a new phone. Anybody have an idea what the best way in terms of value for money is to get am iPhone 4S in the UK?
I am under the impression that buying the iPhone from apple directly and then choosing a contract would be the cheapest. What contract would be the best? I would like to avoid pay-as-you-go and budget carriers with shitty coverage. I've been using o2 here in Germany and even though it's relatively cheap compared to its competitors, the coverage is shiet.
I've had good experience with virgin mobile when I was living in Paris, so how is that? Orange also used to offer its users some perks like 2 for 1 movie tickets, would be good if someone could shed some light on that.

Would really appreciate any input!

I don't have any of them fancy phones (break em or lose em) so i'm on pay as you go, but I've been with Virgin and Orange.

Orange was fine and the movie tickets were a plus, but I also made the mistake of having broadband with them and since then i've just thought fuck it with all orange products.

Virgin mobile is ok, if I top up a tenner a month i get 400 free texts for the following month (makes me have to take up texting cos I usually just call people). I like how i can set my debit card with it as well, don't remember being able to do that with Orange.

Also for coverage Virgin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Orange. at least in Leicestershire anyway.
