2 Photoshop Questions (Brushes and File-Type thing)

Hey guys, I'll be to the point

I was told that .PNG files were used when the artist wanted transparent spots on the image to stay transparent, I was working with this, and it wasn't doing what I wanted it to. Is this my error or are .PNG images not what I need to work with

Second, for some reason, under my brush settings, many options, including the place where I select the "scatter" property, are grey, and unchangeable (locked I guess), this is the first time I have worked with brushes in this way, so i don't believe that I did something to make them this way, but I would like the problem remedied

    -Thank you

don't know about the 2nd off hand, but for the first, make sure you click the "customize settings" (or something similar) option when saving as a .png. (and make sure its set to keep existing transparancy in the image, as opposed to everything thats a certain color is set to be transparent.

both .png and .gif support transparancy btw.

But .gif often pixelates your image to hell.
