I play regularly in internet cafes in China. LOUD as hell, people shouting all the time, spitting, smoking, dirty, dark......... still, you get used to it!
Back in Denmark I used to go to (and host) several lans just for relatively close friends. We were normally about 12, and it was always a blast hanging out and playing starcraft, cs 1.5, and especially DOD.
Original DOD is definitely the best lan game ever; It requires a lot of teamwork, and there's nothing like the adrenaline rush you get from sprinting under heavy machine gun fire for that final flag and victory ;P

Hmm, I've been at a LAN cafe in two occasions where someone got shot(didn't die) knifed(died.)
The shooting broke out when some kid started talking shit to some thug in the LAN cafe's CS server.
The stabbing just happened due to gang violence.
Besides those tragic events, I've had good times there. Even better when your friend owns a LAN center and your friends can play DOTA in peace without any customers around during closing hours.
