Beat the LadderA ladder talk with tL.SorimachitL.Sorimachi @ Azeroth "AMM is screwed up big time," says John "tL.Sorimachi" Chen. In a mere five days, the 23-year-old Undead player skyrocketed up the ladder to try and prove exactly that by becoming the first Azeroth player ever to hit level 50.
By KIDARCTICA While this was written, Sorimachi was only one game or two away from reaching level 50. Only the max game limit prevented him from getting it earlier. Once there, he will be historic. Few people expected Azeroth, or US East, to get a level 50 ever. "People will remember me as the first level 50, but as an abuser too," John thinks, and admits that he does not deserve the level 50. "No, never. My real level is around level 35 for sure. But it is my point to show Blizzard that people worked hard to get level 50, and I did it in five days. The AMM is not fair towards gosus. All the hard work is gone," he says. GAINED 18 LEVELS The new AMM system, short for Automatic Matchmaking, has caused quite some controversy. High-level players complain that they face low-level players constantly, and that they do not gain anything from beating them. Lower level players complain as they constantly get paired up against higher level players, and that they do not win. In the Reign of Chaos days, you could get paired up with players within ten levels of yourself. Then, the system was changed and the limit was six levels. The new AMM disregards level and experience. In the official Battle.net explanation, it says: "Battle.net determines a player's skill based upon the player's wins and losses, as well as the quality of opponents faced." Instead of looking at the actual level, Battle.net uses a "hidden" level in order to match up players and to calculate experience points lost and won. This level is called the "expected ladder level" (ELL). If your BNet level is higher than your ELL, you will get less XP for winning and lose XP more when you get a loss. On the other hand, if your BNet level is lower than your ELL, you will get more XP for winning and lose less when losing. Taken to the extreme, a good player with a good record will gain so to speak nothing from winning and lose a lot when losing, while a player with a worse record will benefit a lot by gaining more XP from a win and losing less for a loss. This is what people take advantage of. It started on the Beta ladder Westfall, where a player made it to level 42 in one week. Now, it happens on the regular ladders. "Before 1.15, I was stuck at level 31. On Azeroth, everyone camps, and one game takes hours. Now I use the ELL to help me levelling my real level, and I have gained 18 levels since the new patch," Sorimachi says. While he does not feel he deserves the level 50, Sorimachi is still a decent player. He has played games since he was eight years old ("Super Mario Bros was a hit"), and started playing Warcraft with the first beta. Last year, he won the Canadian ESWC finals. And Sorimachi stresses that it took him some work to make it to the top. "I played around 18-20 hours per day, almost 100 games every day including losses, of course. But it is not easy, I have to control my wins and my losses. When it is time to win, I win, so that I can control my experience. I am not sure most people can do that," he says. GARBAGE Over the past week, Sorimachi has taken a lot of heat, both on BNet and in various forums. Most people criticise him for abusing the system. What he does, is that he chooses to quit games when he is paired up with players below level 15, and he plays against all the higher level players. "Playing against those below level 15 may waste my time, and I will not get a lot of experience from them. I fight all the high levels since I found it worth it. Is this abuse?" he asks rhetorically. In fact, Sorimachi is a bit tired of getting the word abuse thrown at him all the time. He admits he would not have quit games with the old AMM system, and he admits that he is indeed taking advantage of the new system - because it lets him. "Look at it this way. There is a store selling goods (BNet), they once forgot to change their price tag (bugged AMM) of their items, so people started buying a lot (gain experience). And now, some customers (all those who whine) have found that it is not right to make a profit off the store (abuse?), so they will wait until new price tags are put on the items (fixed AMM)," Sorimachi says, quoting from a reply he made to one of the threads attacking him. "Either you play smart to save your money over the products (profit from the buggged AMM and live with it), or you can be a "nice guy" and keep waiting, earning nothing and even suggesting to the store owner (Blizzard) to call the police for them to arrest those who bought those products (reset, ban or whatever)..." The 23-year-old player from Montreal does not hide that strongly dislikes the new system, in spite of it helping him ladder up fast. "The new AMM is garbage. I think Blizzard should get rid of the hidden level and use the old AMM with a larger range for pairing up people. That is it." RESET? Sorimachi has been told that some players have gone to the step of calling Blizzard to complain, and he has heard that the "abusers" will be reset. "I am ready to be sacrificed," he admits. "I proved my point, but honestly, Blizzard resets you because you quit when you want and play when you want? What a joke. I will be the first level 50 on Azeroth and get reset by Blizzard because their own AMM sucks. Of course I will be pissed, but I am prepared." If a reset happens, Sorimachi will just start over again. "Accounts don't mean much to me. Give me two weeks, and I can be level 50 on Asia or Europe. Ladder is now really worthless. For gosus, offline events and tournaments mean a lot more. You can win every game in your ladder games, but in a tournament, you get beaten badly," he says, and reveals that he will try to qualify for WCG this year. John does not see himself as a gosu. "Maybe hasu?" he smiles. When asked about the current top 20 on the Azeroth solo ladder, Sorimachi makes even more smileys. "Full of noobs, oops, I mean gosus. Those gosus just spent a lot of time, like me, and got there. I don't check levels anymore, because they are meaningless. Noobs will take over the top ladder positions on every realm, well, maybe not Europe or Kalimdor," he says, and mentions himself totally crushing a level 37 Night Elf player in eight minutes. In spite of all the complaints, Sorimachi is just going to keep playing the way the system allows him to. "It is ok to cry about the new AMM, but if you cry too long, no one will give a damn. It is like in a society, you will meet stuff that you don't like, but you have to live with it," he thinks. "Oh, and on abuse stuff, I have seen so many people who started by calling me an abuser, and now they have become abusers, too. I start out as the target, but then people follow because they know they have to live with what we have got. They hate me, but love me at the same time," he says with a smile. sorimatchi is crazy guy, last summer he drove down from montreal to toronto for a wc3 roc tournament. Thier were only two people thier, (me + him). He decided just to drive all the way back to montreal. Its gotta suck for him to drive 7hrs and then go right back to montreal which is anohte r7 hrs. lol
he aint lvl 50 yet... :p and anyway, his lvl 35 old system, probably approx equals a lvl 49 new system. (meaning he really hasn't abused the system, but simply reached his 'peak level' quicker than every one else, due to the amount of games played)

Almost lvl 50, that would suck if someone beat him to it. He's a pretty good player, and I agree with his points on the new AMM.
I always knew Sori was good.....and this AMM is getting him the attention he derserves. Whether or not that attention is good or bad, he's now gonna be looked upon as the first North American player to reach level 50. In my books, thats quite a feat, regardless of how he got there.
I hope that things will change after this whole incident, but I don't think that accounts will get reset for "abusing the system". Blizzard made it the way it is, so they have to be prepared to take shit for it. They screwed up, there is no one to blame but them.

It ain't Sori's fault. It's Blizzard's. They phucked up the AMM so now they have to fix it. If I has level 35, I wouldn't waste time by playing level 10's either.

The new ladder actually might not be flawed. I cannot explain it under 500 characters however. The key point which "explains" away the abuse is that there is an ELL cap that is based on your number of games.

I'm still playing ladder on Northrend mainly because I'm not high level (40+) and I want my Shaman icon =... Anyways, it's sad that Blizzard still denies that this AMM is crap, even trying to justify it with that statement of how the AMM works (I find it funny that it took like a month to write up a description of how it works that was about 2 pages long).
Miter, he only has 1 game to play for 50, and then he doesnt need to play anymore but whatever i dont care, i dont dislike sori, just dont like the way that the first person in east got 50, if it was someone else i would have flamed the same way look at other servers, the best players that worked hard got 50 sweet[saint] in asia, apm70 in europe, i was hoping to see the same in east( the best player reach the top)

If the AMM system thinks a level 10 player is as good as a level 30+ then the xp gained from beating the lvl 10 should be decent imo

I stopped playing WC3 and checking ladder for like a week and I find out that a guy on Azeroth is almost lvl50. lol...The new AMM really is garbage.
Sorimachi is a loser. he watches replays all day and micros during the replay (eg: tries to immitate the players micro by copying their movements) This is what he does at lans...He deserves no interview.

Well I see how it might screw up things for the solo players but the New AMM has tremndously increased the quality of RT games. PPl of relatively equal skill get matched against each other much earlier and you dont have to pray every game anymore that please GOD let me reach lvl 17 or 18 fast so I can finally get at least HALFWAY decent allies and don´t have to play with MR: Frenchguy anymore. Plus the games start to get really exciting before lvl 15 too.
well ghost seeing that he is frank and in his profile he even admits sayin that he's not a level 50 player, i dont see why you are jumping on him :). He seems like a nice guy from the interviews ( both here and at www.ftgl.cjb.net) and much respect to him for actually admitting that he's abusing the system and is ready to be reset.
issue gets covered with mixed reactions. Whoda thunk it. So i take it old system lvl 35 wouldnt be matched with a lvl 15, and in no way unless custom gaming would a lvl 35 be matched yet you get all angry when he choses to quit against lvl 15's. Sure you can complain all you want, its your parogative to do so, but where exactly is the point on laddering if theres no benefits whatsoever and if you simply waste times on people you previously couldnt have wasted time one? OMG he picks his opponents HAX! OMG hes leaving fights he shouldnt be in with HAX grow up a little.

Gosus are a minority on the ladder. Now, put on a business hat, and answer this for me: You have a customer base of say 100 people. 90 of them complain that they get smurfed and are unhappy with your ladder. 10 of them are happy. Which group are you going to cater to? Would you lose the 90 customers or the 10?

sorimachi seems ok i guess, i mean the amm system isn't great or anything but you'll have to live with it i guess. One thing i dun get.... 18-20 hr per day?? lemme get this straight does he do dis everyday or wat? W3 is a mad game but 18hrs? that doesn't even give u time 4 toilet breaks.
The new AMM seems to work good for low level players like myself. What blizzard should do is make it so that they use the new AMM for players level 25 and under. If you are over 25 then the old AMM should kick in. I'm not programmer but that sounds like it would be easy to program in. I'm all for a ladder reset.

ok...nobody is supporting the garbage ladder. if you weren't braindead, you'd know he was drawing attention to the fact it only took him a matter of days to jump almost 20 levels to the top of the ladder so that IT WOULD BE FIXED.

yeah the new system is flawed. i used to be level 11 level 13 max. and now i got lvl 15 almost 16 with my eyes closed. with one hand on the TV remote and my other hand using a TRACKPAD !! i even switched the MONITOR OFF and watched X-FILES and still got level 15 !! blizzard RANKS ARE NOW MEANINGLESS.
I do not think you have improved 18 lvls in a couple of weeks, you are just abusing the system and deserve to be in the 30 area. If you cant finish of a "camping" opponent then you are no better then the opponent. This is a good example of abuse but both you and i know that you dont deserve to be lvl 50.
i doubt blizzard will reset anyone. im pretty sure that they will take a few months to fix the AMM as well. Works in theory, not in practice. Theres always next time.. hopefully ^ ^; . $.02

I personally don't really understand what all the flaming is about... He's just doing us all a service/favor by showing how broken the AMM system is, right? Even for this, and the potential reset he will get for showing up Blizzard's lovechild should deserve the tag level 50.
I considered myself to leave the games that were way below my skill level, that is level 40 & lower, but I dislike losses when I don't lose.

I simply won about 50 games in a row to show another aspect of the AMM where it fails; I meet increasingly lower level opponents which can never be the intention. So we all contribute by showing the flaws, thank sorimachi for doing his part...

very very nice article. i agree that amm sucks badly im playng on my acc, quite a level, but i kept on fighting level ones and in the end i dont get exp at all.

Actually he is as good as an lvl 50, because blizzard writes that every ladder should have lvl 50 players. They say it will be easier on lesser crowded ladders than example kalimdor or europe..
why isnt he lvl 50? he only needs to play two games or so..?

Notwithstanding Sorimachi's intentions and the comforting words for him from some real Gosu players, Gostridah's severe disappointment is also understandable to allplayers loving a fair game.
Grubby account is the worst thing. Look at all the players he gets matched with, not even 10% of his skill, and then of course he gains usually 0 XP per game. Will this ever change? According to skill we all know Grubby is a lvl50 talented player, so why does this AMM punish him? He is lower than 50, the AMM should award him bonus XP to get to lvl50 fast.
the AMM system sucks, we must blame the system not the player who is smart enough to use it. I'm curious as to whether Blizzard will reset Sorimachi.. it seems unreasonable considering he is only leaving games he doesn't want to play. If they reset him, it will say a lot about the company. I hope that they don't.

I can't get hte ppl who are angry with Sorimachi, he semes to be a nice guy. Did you went all mad at Quazzi when he abused BM or at Taker when he abuse towers? He admit it him self that he ain't a great player and doesn't deserve lvl 50, I think hes doing a good job showing blizz how screwed up their system is at the moment.
hmm so if anybody starts say at lvl 0 and decide not to vs lower levels just higher levels they will level up very fast?

I don't get it. I guess he has a poor record by quitting alot of games, so his xp loss is minimal. But wouldn't he need to win alot of games to get xp, and then get a "good record" which in turn will punish him when quitting to a 15 player? The only thing he's doing is not wasting time? Btw : BLizz SAID it would take some time for the AMM to work properly. And people started whining day 1. Plz shut up!
Actually I do get it a bit now. He has to win alot less games to for his xp, then if he had a good record. But my amm point still stands. Be patient. I personally love not meeting smurfs all the time. Like when playing level 2 players : "Real lev?". "No. 35..." ...I just go : "f***in fantastic!" (I'm lev 9 solo btw...and yes. Only play about 4-5 games a week.

I think its good that a bunch of high lvl players are commenting on this, hopefully Blizz will take a look at this--fangs, it doesnt matter if the system will "take a while" to work--its already failed us , and that is exactly what sorimachi proved by getting lvl 50 so fast and not deserving it; i mean, GRUBBS doesnt even have lvl 50 yet!!

I'm not sure i hate the new system. I think we should all give it a bit more time and see how it turns out. From readong blizzard's explanation on mojo's strategy guide it sounds like the new system will take some time before it sorts everybody out to their appropriate level. I do however feel that there should be greater experience penalties for losses, as currently it seems that all a player has to do to get a high level is play a lot of games
Nice interview, tL.Sorimachi seems like a decent guy. My only complaint is that after playing many hours and winning around 60% of my games, ive only leveled up twice. You get so few xp on nearly every game, how do they do it? I know you could leave all those games, but still... cmon AMM wheres my 10 lvls in a week?!
People just don't realize while most high level players are advancing very fast, this is exactly what blizzard wants. As it states, Blizzard wants a more high level players to reach level 50 in gateways outside kalimdor. So, of course there will be some players reaching level 50 before everyone else. But he won't be the only one. Its suppose to work like this, because then there'll be more populated high level players to play games.
Once the system settles, and more high lv players get to level 50, there'll be a LOT more games played in level 40+ solo

i happened to get 1 of those free wins from sori on my lvl 19 smrf. he said it wasnt worth playing vs which is true. this new AMM is a mistake and blizzard is too stubborn to admit it. but he is not 50 yet altho he will be. jooky- was in fact AHEAD of sori for a great deal of time but hit "max games" earlier. dont bash the "abusers" its time to bash blizzard. OR maybe they just have infinitely more wisdom than us and see the greater picture! all i know is i cant wait to see kalimdors entire ladder FILLED with lvl 50s! WILL REMIND ME OF D2 EX! =D

With the old system smurfs really made playing the game for beginners/noobs/low level players really boring. I personally think that the old system would work if there could be only like 1 acc per key or something. (which could be self-resetable or something)

I played a game called Myth 2 back in the day. The ladder on that was way better than this. One account per person, no resetting the account, and it wasn't a random search like this is. People could enter games much like custom, choose teams and play. I don't see whats wrong with that. If people abused the ladder in that game they got their accounts frozen permanantly...

He wasn't the first person to come up with this system, just the first person to truly impliment it. Laprac-Magus came up with this a week or less after patch game out and gave me the idea, but I (being the admittably wuss I am) found it hard-breaking to leave those games and stopped after the second one. Lap seemed to level a level 9 account to level 19 with like 7 hours of playing or something insane like that -_-

The accounts will decay eventually, unless they deserve lvl 50" I'd say thats the best idea for this situation.. Nice work btw Sormiachi, even if AMM is screwed. Not many can get to level 50. I completely agree with you on the amm crisis but from a newb's point of view I like the new system, because it gives us who suck more reason to play because were acheiving higher levels quicker and more easly.
And all pros get owned by those people who take advantage of this AMM Blizzard WILL change it...And surely restart ladders or so people who got high lvl would still be ... for long time (if they play 1 game every week, even if they lose this one :p...)

If your BNet level is higher than your ELL, you will get less XP for winning and lose XP more when you get a loss. On the other hand, if your BNet level is lower than your ELL, you will get more XP for winning and lose less when losing. That doesn't mean that good players gain little experience or bad players gain alot, it means that if battle.net has determined your account to be of a skill higher then your visible ladder level, the system essentially helps you get where you need to be. Nothing is broken, the AMM is fine, you guys need to calm down.

Nice article, I left for 6 weeks came back and felt like I was in the twilight zone because I was paired with levels 20+ who sucked and did not know what the hell was going on.I hate the system its ridiculous, and if I was ghostrider id be pissed off to, all that hard work to get a high level means shit now.I dont really think that this guy was trying to do a good deed, but instead was just the first person to use the new sytem to his advantage.However at least poeple like ghostrider can still win the major tournements, mid-levels on the other hand really don't have much to gain, except for ladder climbing that does not mean a damn thing.

I dont really blame sori for trying to reach a high level by playing more games, and leaving games that dont matter. Its blizzards fault that he is leaving these games, because there is no penalty for losing. gj on getting to lvl 50 but after watching ur replay against shooting[star] i have to say that u take advantage of the bad system (smart) but also the ud nuke (gay). i mean if u cant beat someone who is massing air and a couple grunts with the best aa race then u have some problems. just send in some freakin aboms and take them out. i know i dont have the micro skills to take u on but i know someone cheap when i see one. and wth do u have to choose ur freakin race? do u only have 1 strat u can use? another thing, i dont think it took skill to win at the end of the game i mentioned above, anyone can run around in circles nuking and running just cuz u the fastest freakin hero in the game and then healing back in ur base protected by slow towers that makes u even harder to catch. dont u think that someone that is lvl 50 shouldnt be taking strat criticism from a lvl 17 rter (lvl 6 soloer)??????? In retrospective of the fixed AMM, the days of whining seems kinda distant. Personally, I am glad they made these changes. Now there are no more AT whores, no smurf, and you are respected with your 50% record.:)
