The Writing Department is Hiring!
Ready Your Pens

Are you one of the many who longs for a green name and custom avatar? Do you have a passion for writing creative or strategical pieces? If so, you're in luck, because you may have the chance to be a part of WCReplays.com's ever growing staff. The Writing Team is looking for a couple more members to fill the positions of DotA Writer, Columnist and WarCraft Strategist. Here's what the rolls entail:

DotA Writer:
If Defense of the Ancients is your game, you could have the skills we're looking for to be a DotA Writer! The role of a DotA Writer is to create strategy articles for the game, with the purpose of helping others to get better. These can either be in the form of a guide, as shown in the example below, or you can come up with your own ways of portraying different strategic elements of the game.

Example DotA Writings: Example 1 (http://www.wcreplays.com/page?section=articles&id=608) | Example 2 (http://www.wcreplays.com/page?section=articles&id=550) | Example 3 (http://www.wcreplays.com/page?section=articles&id=499)

Columnist
Columnists are creative writers who can write on near to any subject, so long as it relates back to WarCraft. An ideal creative piece should get the reader thinking, perhaps contain some sort of philosophical value or contain some good old fashioned humour. Columns are generally shorter than Strategy pieces, and therefore the quota (see below) is more demanding.

Example Columns: Example 1 (http://www.wcreplays.com/page?section=articles&id=647) | Example 2 (http://www.wcreplays.com/page?section=articles&id=239) | Example 3 (http://www.wcreplays.com/page?section=articles&id=622)

Strategy Writer
The role of the strategy writer is exactly that: to create strategy articles. A good strategy article will take a particular element of the game and analyse it in fine detail, with the purpose of helping others get better. A substantial knowledge of the game is a must for this position.

Example Strategy Writings: Example 1 (http://www.wcreplays.com/page?section=articles&id=644) | Example 2 (http://www.wcreplays.com/page?section=articles&id=651) | Example 3 (http://www.wcreplays.com/page?section=articles&id=611)

I want to apply: sign me up!

Before you consider applying, you should be aware that there is a quota which is enforced. This quota is ONE strategy or DotA article each month (4 weeks) or ONE column each fortnight (2 weeks).

If you're still interesting in applying; great! Send an email to ciel@wcreplays.com with the subject in the following format:

Writing Staff Application - YourNameHere

Obviously replacing YourNameHere with your forum alias. The email should contain the following information:

WCR Handle (forum name)
Position You Are Applying For (strategy, DotA, columnist)
Your Name
Email Address We Can Contact you With
Either MSN or AIM details. (specify which)
A short paragraph explaining why we should hire you.

Also included should be a sample of your writing. This only needs to be a few paragraphs, but must not be left out. If you are applying for a WarCraft or DotA strategy spot, this sample should be written on the area you're applying for, though doesn't have to be complete. This is so we can gain an understanding on your level of game knowledge and how strong you are as a writer. Samples can be attached, pasted in to the email or linked, but external downloads won't be opened.

Applications should be submitted before Midnight EST on December 20th

Good luck with your application! If you have any questions, feel free to post them here, or send me a PM or email.

Is post history and manner taken into consideration?

Manner most certainly, but post-count is different. Obviously if you're active in the community we'll have noticed, but activity is no substitute for good writing. Certainly though, behaviour of any staff is expected to be exemplary. Hope that helps.

^ Post history, not post count lol. Silly Julian.

It honestly depends. There are screenings as to who becomes staff. People with a long history of trolling, bad manner or just unruly behaviour on the forums who are generally nuisance with a long list of warnings or temporary bans will probably not get hired. There's no general rule for who does get hired, but in general those who are are expected to deliver exemplary behaviour on the forums. Being on staff is a priveledge, and with your increased role and power there are also increased responsibilities and expectations. Ie: With great power comes great responsibility /cliche.

Also I hear that writing staff is full of insufferable pricks that ostracize anyone not deemed worthy enough to put articles out alongside them.

So I hear. :whistling:

It's taken in to account, though won't be the deciding factor. If it's the only thing holding you back from applying, it's worth going for it anyway.

Also, some of you seem to be missing the part about needing a writing sample in the application. All applications MUST include a sample of your writing.

Nah, you can post in l33t speak all you want if you're accepted. For a sample, if you're applying for a DotA/Strategy role, I'd suggest providing a Strategy sample. It doesn't have to be complete.

If you're going for a columnist, any example writings are fine, be it a short story, essay or otherwise.
