It depends on what kind of workout, if you're going for a jog/run, you want something with a medium tempo (im weird and my body syncs with song speeds), but if you just lifting weights then most any rock or techno/trance stuff will work
John Coltrane

There's only one we'll really play and that's The Haters/Merzbow banned production cassette. It is thee quintessential. And then basement jam and then wine and then marijuana and then the continuous heaven. Blessed are the noise musicians for they will go down in history. Way, way down.

I usually listen to the same stuff they play at the gym, which is like mylo or something.
Damn, I was just reading a magazine that had a special website with playlists designed for certain types of workouts. I.e. if you're jogging, it has a medium tempo with a certain number of beats per minute so it helps you keep a pace. Try to google it.. I think it started with a D. ;<

When I am doing cardio I like shorter songs so I can go through lots of them. Lots of ska/punk is good for that (Catch 22, Goldfinger). When I'm on the bike and I want to mainain a high rotations/minute, I like to listen to the ska/punk cause of its fast tempo, or rap (Jay-Z or Nelly are alright here). Another thing I do (and this is pretty supremely dorky) is to listen to Drum Corp music. The shows are about ~15 minutes, which can take up a nice chunk of your session, and since I love the music I can get pumped pretty hardcore on the music. For lifting I listen to pretty much everything, but intense stuff like Eminem is pretty good for those last sets and really heavy/unenjoyable lifts.
